| The Calvert Cliffs are impressive, whether from the water, standing on the beach, or looking down on them from above. Few people realize that Native Americans also sought out these wonders and were the first people to utilize the cliffs. Even Captain John Smith remarked on them during his explorations. Some folks are thrilled to find a fossil that eroded from the cliffs; others enjoy walking along the beach and taking in their beauty, and some people live in homes threatened by cliff erosion and advocate extreme measures to stabilize them, regardless of the cost. But how many of us really understand the significance of this impressive land formation? This talk will explore ways of looking at a resource that is awe inspiring to many and yet threatening to some. Dr. Eshelman will help us to better understand, not just the basics of how these cliffs were formed, but also what they mean to us as humans. |
