Everyone loves good news and the Howard County Conservancy just got great news from REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.). The Conservancy received a grant of $10,000 from REI in support of the Conservancy’s active and diverse volunteer programs. This generous gift kicks off a partnership between the Conservancy and REI. Employees of the new Columbia REI store recently performed a day of service at the Conservancy, clearing invasive vines and restoring a historic stone wall in an outdoor classroom.
This grant will support programs such as the Conservancy’s Volunteer Naturalist program, which trains volunteers to lead school groups on hikes at the Conservancy, and the Habitat Restoration Group, which pairs adult mentors with students to work on trail maintenance. The Howard County Conservancy is excited to partner with REI to take our active volunteer programs and give them the boost they need to continue providing outdoor learning experiences for more than 6,000 students a year.
In addition, REI has announced that the Conservancy will benefit from a new Facebook feature called “Deals.” If a customer uses their mobile device to “check in” while at REI, an additional donation will be made to the Conservancy.
The Howard County Conservancy is a non-profit organization and the only environmental education center in Howard County. The Conservancy provides educational programs for children and adults throughout the year and is located on Old Frederick Road (Route 99) three miles west of Route 29.
